St Mary's Church, Polstead

St Mary's Church lies just outside the centre of the village of Polstead, up on a hill with sweeping views over the Box Valley. This is one of Suffolk's finest Norman churches as visitors can see inside from the nave arcades and rare brick arches.

Traces of Roman building material are thought to have come from the ruined villa next to the churchyard. The site goes back to St Cedd's legendary preaching under the Gospel Oak, in the grounds of Polstead Hall, circa AD 653.

Do linger for a while outside the church and admire the beautiful views across the valley.
