We have compiled a list of things to do to keep you busy during your visit to the Heart of Suffolk. We have picked out some interesting churches for you to visit, from majestic churches in our Suffolk wool towns and villages to small and beautiful churches in the Suffolk countryside. Why not visit them by bike? Suffolk is a fantastic county for cycling, with its gently undulating landscapes and quiet country lanes. You could book a cycling holiday with Cycle Breaks and explore to your heart’s content.
What about learning a new skill while you are visiting the county? We have some fantastic courses ranging from an eclectic mix of rural skills and crafts courses at Assington Mill, near Sudbury, to cookery courses at the stupendous Helmingham Hall near Stowmarket and many more in between.
Don’t forget to explore our many farm shops and markets and our galleries and studios to pick up some delicious, locally made Suffolk produce or a piece of art, handmade in Suffolk and we have also inclued a list of specialist shops where you can find a special souvenir and a lovely reminder of your holiday.
Our selection of gardens and parks include the delightful Thornham Walks where you can walk along footpaths through the woodland and their walled garden. There’s also The Place for Plants, an aboretum in East Berholt and the wildlife garden down at Flatford Mill in the heart of Constable Country.
Why not take a guided walk around Lavenham, Stowmarket, Long Melford or Sudbury or a guided tour around the Shotley Peninsula? Or if you fancy seeing the Heart of Suffolk from the air, we have a few options for local hot air balloon rides too! Or spend a relaxing day or two fishing in our lakes and rivers.
Our range of visitor attractions is varied, ranging from historic houses and museums such as Gainsborough’s House where the artist was born, Kentwell Hall, with their fantastic historic re-enactments and the fascinating Mechanical Music Museum and Bygones with their quirky collection of musical instruments and memorabilia. We also have some wonderful farm and animal attractions such as Baylham Rare Breeds Farm, Jimmy’s Farm and the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary and the Museum of East Anglian Life showing the rural and social history of East Anglia.
The Heart of Suffolk is a hive of cultural activity too, with some wonderful places to enjoy the performing arts from the tiny Barrandov Opera, near Needham Market, to the John Peel Centre in Stowmarket and the Quay Theatre in Sudbury.
