Kentwell Hall, Suffolk

The Easter weekend is one of the most popular of the year at Kentwell Hall in Long Melford. The annual Eastertide event, one of Kentwell’s famous historical re-creations, takes place with around 100 Tudors going about their business in the manor and throughout the picturesque grounds; all of them celebrating Easter in Tudor style as if it were the year 1594.

Visitors can wander around the hall and gardens, watching Tudors baking hot cross buns in the bakehouse, cooking an Easter feast in the kitchens for the gentlefolk of the manor and doing other work around the estate.

16th century life will be continuing as usual and it is great fun to observe and interact with the Tudors. Visitors can talk to them about the politics and ‘current’ affairs of 1594, but any mention of modern day life will be met with a quizzical look and a raised eyebrow!

The Impossible Quiz

Visitors are invited to take part in The Impossible Quiz. This has been a feature of the Easter weekend at Kentwell for well over 30 years and is hugely popular, with teams coming to Suffolk from around the country to compete for the huge chocolate Easter egg that is up for grabs.

Be warned though: this is no ordinary quiz. It is a test of your powers of observation as well as your wit. Written by Patrick Phillips, the owner of Kentwell, it is a fun challenge for the whole family.

Especially for Children

A number of wooden eggs will be hidden around the gardens for children to find. Each bears a code that can be used to solve a puzzle. There are also the family storybook trail in the garden to explore as well as the Heffalump Hunt down on the farm. Also on the farm, this year’s lambs, chicks and piglets join the sheep, cows, pigs, goats and horses.

Gardens

Kentwell Gardens are delightful at any time of year, but are perhaps at their best in the spring when they are awash with spring blooms and blossom. Explore the walled garden, wander through the woodland and rest for a while, by the moat.

The Eastertide event is largely under cover and activities will carry on whatever the weather, from Friday 14th – Monday 17th August, 11.00am – 5.00pm
